A reindeer farm in the Jänkälä forests
Johku Porotila is a family-run farm in Jänkälä, 12 kilometres north of Johkula centre. Come and meet the reindeer, feed them, and hear what a herder's year looks like. Visits are booked through Johku Resort.
Up close with the reindeer
In the enclosure the reindeer come close when you hold lichen in your hand. Eero tells you who is who and shows how the ear marks tell one reindeer from another.
Campfire coffee in the kota
The visit ends in the kota, a traditional hut, with campfire coffee and stories of reindeer herding in the Johkula forests.
