Reindeer and the herding year

Reindeer and the herding year

Reindeer herding follows the seasons. Calves are born in spring, and in summer the reindeer graze freely in the forests and on the bogs. In autumn they are gathered for the round-ups, and in winter they stay closer to the farm, where they are fed lichen and hay.

Ear marks

Every reindeer carries its owner's ear mark. The mark is cut in the calf's first summer and tells whose reindeer it is.

The Jänkälä pastures

The forests and bogs of Jänkälä are good pasture: lichen grows on the dry heaths, and leaves and grasses at the edges of the bogs. That is why the farm is here, far from the village lights.

This is a Johku demo website. The farm and the people are fictional.
